Most teenagers in Uganda have sex by 16-years, but the sub county health inspector, Gabriel Odipiyo says village health teams (VHT) have remained stuck with up to two thirds of their condom consignments because young men are afraid to ask for them.

Addressing a Youth Leadership conference on Monday, Odipiyo said even some of the young men who are aware of the advantages of condoms are too shy to ask for them.

Some of the youths prefer to seek for condoms from the VHT workers at night, said Odipiyo.

Odipiyo blamed the situation on lack of awareness and cultural ties. Most young men still associate asking for condoms as an act of immorality.

According to Henry Lulua, the manager Arua district AIDS Information Centre, HIV/ AIDS prevalence in Arua stands at about 25%.
