Police in Kabarole are investigating the Tuesday evening shooting of an Electoral Commission official.
Grace Kato, a supervisor for the voter registration exercise in Mahama, Hakibaale Sub-County, was waylaid and shot by unknown assailants at about 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. At the time she was traveling to her home on a bodaboda motorcycle. The gunmen aimed at her head, hitting her once and causing the bodaboda to veer off the road.
Edison Businge, the LC3 chairman of Hakibaale, says the gunmen attempted to steal a computer and camera in Kato's possession.
The cyclist was not hurt. He quickly recovered and sped away from the scene to the nearest trading center.
Grace Kato is admitted in Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition.
The Kabarole officer in charge of criminal investigations, Joseph Ssentamu Bitali, says no suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting. He says there is little information available to ascertain whether Kato was merely a victim of a robbery gone bad or if the assailants intended to sabotage the voter registration process.
