Maurine Kunihira, a resident of Mpara Kyaka, Kyegegwa district, was netted on Wednesday morning in her home area.

She was arrested by CID detectives from Fort Portal after the parents to the victim identified as Molly Nzabaki and Yasin Ayesiga, all residents of Kamengo in East division, reported the matter to the police.

It’s alleged that that Kunihira went to their home pretending to be sick and asked the mother to the victim for some water to swallow her tablets.

Nzabaki said that when she returned with the water for the suspect, she had already disappeared along with her baby.

According to Laurence Okello, the Criminal Investigations Officer Fort Portal, the parents reported the theft of their baby to police on 23rd January, 2013. They said that neighbours had last seen Kunihira carrying the baby towards Fort Portal town.

The detectives were tipped that Kunihira was from Mpara Kyaka, Kyegegwa district.

The CID officer revealed that Brenda Kyomugisha, the coordinator for Justice for Children’s program Rwenzori region, funded police detectives on Wednesday to travel to Kyegegwa to investigate and arrest the suspect. Led by detective Muhumuza, Kunihira was found with the stolen baby and arrested.

On interrogation Kunihira said that she is a fiancée to Ronald Ategeeka a UPDF soldier now in Kampala. She said that her fiancé had put her on pressure to produce a child.

Kunihira said that she stole the baby when it was two weeks old and she has been feeding him on milk and soya.

CID Okello said that Kunihira will be taken to court to answer charges of child theft and kidnap.
The parents were overjoyed to be reunited with their child who they feared had been stolen for child sacrifice.
