A Uganda People’s Defense Forces—UPDF soldier attached to Mihunga detach in Bugoye sub-county, Kasese district, is being detained for allegedly shooting and injuring a civilian.

According to the 305 brigade spokesperson Lt. Ninsiima Rwemijuma, the incident happened on Sunday evening at Nyakalengijo trading centre in Bugoye sub-county.

Eye witnesses say Private Anatoli Biryamureba developed a fight with Ronald Kule, who is aged 25, before he shot at him. It is alleged that the two have been seeing a woman who operates a business at the trading centre.

The injured was admitted to Kilembe Hospital and underwent a surgery on his eye.

The medical superintendent of Kilembe Hospital was not available for a comment but a nurse found in the surgical ward said Kule was operated on successfully.

Lt. Rwemijuma says Private Biryamureba is detained at the Kavera barracks in Hima town council as investigations into the incident continue.

He however quotes the errant soldier as saying he fired one bullet in the air when he was attacked by civilians on his way back to the barracks.

Lt. Rwemijuma says that when Biryamureba’s gun was checked it was found that one bullet was released.

He has written to Kilembe Hospital administration to release a report to ascertain whether the victim sustained a gunshot wound or as injured by another sharp object.

He condemns the incident adding that the soldier will be disciplined because he shot the bullet under his command.

Three weeks ago, another soldier attached to Kyanzuki detach in Kilembe sub-county shot dead his colleague when they developed a fight over a woman.

In August this year, a civilian identified as Byamukama Muhereza was allegedly shot dead by a UPDF soldier in Bweramule sub-county, Ntoroko district.
