There has been a noticeable increase of UPDF soldiers deployed on the islands.
The heavy deployment has caused fear in the fishing community.
Last evening DP Secretary General Mathias Nsubuga told a news conference in Kampala that the deployment had created fear among fishermen in Kalangala.
Brigadier Joseph Ssemwanga, the Masaka Armored Brigade Commander has confirmed deployment of soldiers in Kalangala.
Ssemwanga says the deployments were prompted by the lax security on the islands. Ssemwanga explains that most of those Islands have porous borders which need to be monitored and defended.
According to Ssemwanga, the deployment was sanctioned by Commander of Defense Forces General Edward Katumba Wamala.
He has therefore asked Kalangala residents to remain calm saying the soldiers were there to protect them and their property.
Caleb Tukaikiriza, the Kalangala Resident District Commissioner who is also the chairperson of the district security committee, says they approved the deployment.
Tukaikiriza says many major projects such as MV Pearl, thermal plant currently under construction and other projects do not have adequate security.
Tukaikiriza therefore says some of the UPDF soldiers are there to reinforce police to protect all these projects.
UPDF has also intensified marine patrols along Lake Victoria as part of the security surveillance.
