UPC National Mobilizer Linked to Attack on UPDF Detach

Dan Oola Odiya, the Uganda people's Congress (UPC) party Deputy National Secretary for Mobilization been linked to the attack on the UPDF detach at Opit in Lakwana Sub County, Gulu district.

During the attack, gunmen killed two people, looted eight weapons and several army uniforms after overrunning a Uganda Peoples Defense Forces detach in Opit trading centre, Lakwana Sub County, Gulu district.    The dead includes a Local Defense Unit soldier identified as Alfonse Ojara and a five-year-old boy identified as Haggai Okullu. They were reportedly shot at by the attackers.

Oola was arrested on Wednesday evening near Amigos bar in Gulu municipality by armed plain-clothed men. He was detained in different places before his transfer to Gulu Central Police Station.

Although police declined to disclose the reason for his arrest, sources within security ranks in Gulu told Uganda Radio Network that the arrest is linked to the attack in Opit.

The source added that security tracking show that some people called Oola Odiya at 4am on the night of the attack and reported that they had finished the job. Security now wants Odiya to explain the details of the conversation and reveal the whereabouts of his accomplices in the attack.

But his lawyers and family members of are demanding for his urgent prosecution.

Abore, Adonga and Ogen Company advocates, the lawyers handling the legal matters on behalf of the family said that they want Police to produce the suspect before court within the mandatory 48 hours that will run out at 8pm today.

Similarly, the suspect's sister, Finny Odiya told Uganda Radio Network from Gulu central Police station that the continued detention beyond the mandatory time will be unconstitutional.

The Regional Police Commander, Wilson Kwanya when contacted said Police is doing its best to see that by the close of today Dan Oola statement is recorded and taken to Resident State Attorney for verification. He declined to confirm linking Olla's arrest to Opit detach saying his arrest is to issues of National security.
