UOC President: We Hope to Qualify More Athletes for London Olympics

William Blick, the acting president of Uganda Olympic Committee-UOC says they expect more athletes to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. So far 15 athletes have qualified, but Blick says that they expect more athletes to hit the qualifying mark. 13 of the athletes are from the track and field events, and one each from Badminton and swimming.


Blick says that after sorting out the administrative problems that have dodged UOC for the last month, they are doing everything possible to get the athletes prepare better for the Games. He says despite the fact that the International Olympic Committee released some fund to help Uganda; they are working with government to try and raise 250 million shillings for the Ugandan team to the Olympics.


He also revealed that Vice President (technical) Denis Galabuzi will be the Chief de mission of the team, while the Sports State Minister Charles Bakkabulindi will also travel as a VIP on the team.

Dominic Otucet, President of the Uganda Amateur Athletics Federation-UAAF said they are satisfied with the preparations and exposure the runners have received from various competitions. Marathoner Benjamin Kiplagat said although he is training hard, he has not yet reached his peak. Kiplagat says that his body has not yet at the level that he thinks is best, but hopes it will be better after his last race in Paris ahead of the Olympics.

The athletics coach Ahimbisibwe says that he is happy with the way the his athletes were training and hopes that this time round they will put up better performances than in the past Olympic Games.
