In short
While releasing the 2016 Uganda Certificate of Education UCE results at the Office of the Prime Minister OPM in kampala, UNEB chairperson Prof Mary Okwakol indicated that the results were withheld due to suspected examination malpractice.
Uganda Certificate of Education Results released this morning reflect a slight drop in performance in compared to the performance in previous years, according to records by the Uganda National Examinations Board-UNEB.
Statistics indicate that out of the 316,624 candidates that turned up for UCE exams in 2016, only 23,489 passed in Division One, a reduction of more than 2000 students from the 25,750 students passed in Division One in 2015.
The reduction was equally visible in the second division with 44,307 students' last year compared to 48,642 students in 2015. However, UNEB figures indicate that there was improved performance by non-Universal Secondary Education (USE) candidates than USE candidates.
UNEB Executive Secretary Dan Odongo says performance was better in English language, Christian Religious Education, History and Geography. Biology had a significant improvement at the Credit and overall pass level compared to 2015.
But despite the slight improvement in Biology, Odongo said the percentage pass levels for all science subjects remain low, with almost 55 percent of the candidates unable to exhibit the minimum required competency to be graded. The worst performed science subject is physics.
Meanwhile the Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) has withheld examination results of at least 1,893 candidates. This reflects a reduction from the 2,060 results that were withheld in 2015.
UNEB chairperson Prof Mary Okwakol says that the results were withheld due to suspected examination malpractice. UNEB Executive Secretary Dan Odongo said that forms of examination breaches occurred inside the examination rooms due to acts of commission by invigilators, subject teachers and school head teachers.
Odongo also noted a new phenomenon that emerged where teachers of science subjects masqueraded as laboratory technicians in order to remain in the examination rooms in a desperate effort to help candidates.
