In Group B matches played at the Emirates Arena, the mixed doubles pair of Wilson Tukire and Margaret Nankabirwa had to dig deep to beat Lavina Sabastian Martins and Joseph Matheri Githitu 2-1. The Kenyan pair won the first set 21-19, before the Ugandan team fought back to win 21-14, 21-13.
 
Next on court was former African top seed Edwin Ekiring who did not disappoint when he defeated Victor Odera Mungu 2-0. The Holland based professional won the game in 22 minutes 21-17, 21-7.
 
The Kenya team later recovered to win a women’s singles match when Joseph Mercy Mwethya saw off Daisy Nakalyango 21-14, 21-15. But the men’s double pair of Ekiring and Tukire made sure Uganda won the match when they beat the pair of Patrick Kinyaua Mbogo and Joseph Matheri Githitu 21-17, 21-13.
 
Joseph Mercy Mwethya and Martins Lavina Sabastian soon picked a consolation win for the kenya team beating Nakalyango and nankabirwa 21-19, 21-17.
 
In the other Group B game played, India stopped Ghana 5-0 to show their intention of topping the Group.
Before we went to press Uganda’s top squash player Micheal Kawooya was yet to face Maketu Schubert from the Papua New Guinea, while Ian Rukunya Kajubu was to face Greed Peter Wal from Wales.
 
Uganda sent 62 athletes who will participate in rugby, cycling, track and field events, badminton, table tennis, boxing, swimming, Para-sports, shooting squash and weightlifting.
