Uganda Start with Win in Zone 5 Basketball Despite Lack of Govt Support

But despite the financial challenges, the men’s team started well this evening with a a 80-66 win over hosts Tanzania at the National Stadium.
 
Ambrose Tashobya, the FUBA Chairman told Uganda Radio Network that it was good to start with victory in TZ.  He said the team is determined to excel in spite of the fact that government failed to secure funds to support them adequately.
 
 A disappointed Tashobya said that FUBA was only able to send the two women and men’s teams had travelled on Sunday and Monday through money collected from well wishers. The teams still face a shortfall of 25million shillings.
 
He said although government had given them assurance that they would contribute some percentage to the trip, their failure to chip in has left FUBA with a huge task ahead.
 
Former top American College Coach Paul Johnson who arrived last week and has been assisting the coaches was also meant to travel to Tanzania for the event which takes place January 21-27.
 
The tournament has attract hosts Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Kenya and giants Egypt.
 
He explained that the regional Championship will also act as qualifiers for the 2013 Africa Cup later in the year. The men’s team has some of the stars like Norman Blick, Steven Omony, Ben Komakech and Henry Malinga, while MVP Flavia Okecho and Liz Kiiza will lead the women’s team.
 
After the first the win over Tanzania, the men’s team face Rwanda on Tuesday, while the women who face Egypt in the opening the same day will play on a round robin basis with all the other teams.
