The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) has suspended Uganda Christian University Canons star basketball player, Desmond Owili for indiscipline. In a letter dated November 12, signed by the Chairman Competition Council, Joseph Sunday Manano and sent to the University, Owili has been suspended for 365 days.
In a letter dated November 12, signed by the Chairman Competition Council, Joseph Sunday Manano and sent to the University, Owili has been suspended for 365 days.
“The FUBA competition council has sanctioned your player Owili for violating article 15.01 sub-sections (b) of the FUBA rules and regulations. He shall be suspended for 365 days, this follows his conduct on Sunday 10th November 2013 immediately at the end of the UCU Canons against Falcons game III match that was played at Lugogo Indoor Stadium,” stated the letter.
Manano stated that Owili had abused and physical assaulted a FUBA referee. “The suspension is effective November 13, 2013 to November 13, 2014. During this time you will not be allowed to attend any FUBA organized activities, register with any team in the FUBA leagues as a player, Coach or manager or even associate with FUBA in any other ways not highlighted here,” it added.
The long term suspension for the Kenyan international player means he could lose his sports scholarship at the Uganda Christian University as well. UCU Canons lost in the quarter final to Falcons 2-1 and Owili was also seen fouling a player in off the ball incidence.
“We cannot tolerate this kind of indiscipline and some players need to be punished so that others can learn a big lesson,” FUBA Vice President in-charge of administration, Dr Patrick Ogwel later told URN.
