Isiko Nabongho, a resident of the area, says he saw the bodies of the minors floating when he went to graze his cattle near the pond. He suspects that the minor could have slipped and drowned in the pond following a heavy down pour.

Two minors have drowned in a pond in Namutumba district. They are 16-year-old Elvis Kairu, a primary seven pupil at Fundamental primary school in Tirinyi and his young brother, Milton Nampongo, a pupil at Magada primary school.

The duo drowned this afternoon while attempting to fish in a pond belonging to Asupasa Isiko Mpongo, the former Busikii county Member of Parliament in Kategere village in Magada Sub County.

The two had returned from their respective schools to collect school fees. Isiko Nabongho, a resident of the area, says he saw the bodies of the minors floating when he went to graze his cattle near the pond. He suspects that the minor could have slipped and drowned in the pond following a heavy down pour.

Wilber Kairu, the Kategere Village LC One Chairperson, says they have repeatedly asked Mpongo to fence off the pond in vain. "We always feared that some of our children could drown in this deep pond since it's always free for anyone to access it any time" he said.

Adding that, "I know the pond is deep but there could have been some rescue attempts in case there were some people nearby."

James Mubi, the Busoga East Police Spokesperson, has urged parents to monitor the movement of their children to avoid similar incidents. By the time of filing this story, Police fire brigade had rescued the bodies of the minors from the pond.

Akuzas Mpongo, the father of the deceased children, says he was busy attending to his maize garden few meters from home when he was informed about the incident. The pond is located almost two kilometers away from the deceased's home.
