Three children were shot dead on Tuesday night by a soldier attached to the Fifth Division. The soldier had been assigned to guard a resettlement camp their family stays.

One and half- year-old Nancy Akidi, four-year-old Gloria Aringo and thirteen-year-old Emmanuel Owiny, were killed when corporal Opolot Oguli opened fire into their house.

Their parents sustained bullet wounds and are currently admitted at Achol Pii military health unit.

The unfortunate incident happened at Kagurui resettlement camp in Alerek subcounty, Abim district.

Residents narrate that corporal Opolot Oguli, who had been deployed to provide security to the community at Kagurui resettlement camp, opened fire on the family under unclear circumstance.

Opolot, according to eye witness, first shot at their mother, who was breastfeeding, on the hand, killing the baby instantly before firing at other members of the family, killing them  instantly.

Their father Vincent Okidi, who was also in the house at the time of the shooting, sustained bullet wounds on the right ankle joint.

Opolot, who went into hiding immediately after the killings, however turned up yesterday at the camp and shot himself. 

The fifth division commander Samuel Kawaga, says they are investigating the incident.

The army has contributed one million shilling towards the burial expenses of the three children and gave additional one million shillings towards treatment of the parents.

The LCIII chairperson of the area, Marino Aballa Otuu described the incident as unfortunate.

The DPC, David Epedu says the shooting was an isolated incident and the UPDF as an institution condemns it.
