Teacher Held Over Death of Student

Kaliro Police are holding Kenneth Waako, a teacher at Namugongo Seed Secondary school in Namugongo Sub County in connection with the death of his student. The deceased has been identified as Zebrata Sajja, a senior two student.

 
Sajja fell of his double decker bed this morning and died after being canned by the teacher while asleep. A student, who declined to be named, says Sajja fell and hit his head on the hard floor after being caned by Waako.

 
"He wanted to wake him up for the normal jogging sessions," he said. According to the student, other students who were running away from dormitory for fear of being canned trampled on the deceased as he lay on the ground.

 
Michael Kasadha, the Busoga South Regional Police spokesperson, says investigations to establish circumstances surrounding the death of the student are ongoing. 

"We are holding the teacher because he is the prime suspect in this case," he said. He advises teachers to use alternative punishments to avoid similar incidents.


Edward Kaamaga, the Kaliro District Inspector of Schools confirmed the incident, but declined to comment further, saying he isn't authorized to speak to the media.
