After verbal battles with MTN Uganda and the National Council of Sports (NCS), Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) has secured the Lugogo Indoor Stadium to host the forth coming Africa Zone 5 regional club championship this month.
FUBA President Ambrose Tashobya said that all parties had finally agreed and the league could go ahead.
Last month MTN Uganda through NCS refused the basketball body to hold national league games at the Arena till the new hoops were imported, but the State Minister of Sports Charles Bakkabulindi’s intervention has helped the Association secure the facility.
The regional tournament which will take place August 20-26th will attract teams from Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda, while those from Sudan and Ethiopia are expected to confirm.
During a press briefing at Lugogo today, it was announced that Uganda will be represented by League champions DMark Power, Kyambogo Warriors (Men), UCU Lady Canons and KCCA Leopard (Women). Winners of the Zone 5 will represent their region in the Africa Cup of nations.
The tournament is being sponsored by Coca Cola Uganda through their Sprite brand and International Air Ambulance. Maggie Kigozi, Brand Manager Coca-Cola Uganda, said Sprite as a brand has been positioned to promote basketball, both in and out of Uganda.
