Swimming Lessons for Children Banned in Gulu

Gulu District Education Department has suspended swimming lessons for school children following the death of a pupil.

Last week, John Bol Garang, a pupil of Credo Nursery and Primary School died in a swimming pool in Bomah Hotel where they were taken for swimming lessons.

Richard Irwenyo, the Gulu Municipal Education Officer says the incident prompted the decision in order for schools and hotels hosting swimming lessons to adhere to safety standards.

Speaking at the requiem mass on Tuesday of Garang at Christ Church in Gulu Town, Irwenyo said the ban will stay until enough safety measures are put in place.

Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the Gulu District Chairperson says hotels with swimming facilities will be required to employ skilled pool attendants trained in rescue and first aid.

He says that the schools will be required to seek consent of parents before they enroll pupils for swimming lessons.

Garang, a South Sudanese has been laid to rest at the cemetery of St. Mary's Hospital Lacor.
