A student has been arrested in connection with a fire that gutted St. Gonzaga Secondary School boys' dormitory on Wednesday.

The suspect is Asiimwe Rogers (19), a senior five student at the school.  Asiimwe was arrested on Thursday and is currently at Lyantonde Police station.

Thomas Eyaku, the Lyantonde District Police Commander, confirms Asiimwe’s arrest and says that police is still looking for other students who participated in starting the fire.

Aloysius Mawulugungu, the headmaster of St.Gonzaga SS, says he is aware of Asiimwe's arrest. He says he is waiting for police to brief the school management on their findings.

Eyaku says that police is investigating claims that some teachers may have played a role in inciting students to start the fire. Eyaku says police has information some teachers want to make the school ungovernable so the Mawulugungu is forced out.

The fire destroyed the boys’ dormitory section called Kayembe which houses over 100 students. Kayembe is the largest section on the dormitory block in the school.

The fire started at around 8am while students were writing their examinations.

Academic documents, money, mattresses, blankets, clothes, books and other property was destroyed in the fire but no student was injured.

Asiimwe, however, strongly denies being the arsonist or in the group that set the dormitory on fire. He says he was in class at the time of the fire.

Four fire incidents have been reported in under a month in Lyantonde. St. Gonzaga SS was torched twice, Lyantonde SS-Kasambya once and a fuel station called Petrol once.

Maxwell Ogwala, the Southern Region Police commander, is  in Lyantonde to help compile a report on the fires.
