11 children were injured yesterday when a storm hit their school in Kapchorwa district and destroyed their classroom.
The storm that swept through Benet and Kosil sub-counties also left more than 200 families homeless.
The children were in class at Kapairikauo Primary School when the storm hit at about 1:30 p.m. Doreen Kapuseyi, the Kapchorwa District Information Officer, says the heavy rain was accompanied by strong gales of wind and the storm lasted four hours.
The children caught in the rubble were rushed to Kapchorwa Hospital for treatment.
Kapuseyi says the roofs of many houses were blown off. She says four houses and a maize mill were buried by falling mud. Elsewhere in the district, homes in low-lying areas have been flooded.
Kapuseyi says that the affected families have taken refuge inside Mount Elgon National Park. She says there is an urgent need for food, accommodation and clothing for the homeless.
