Construction Company Workers on Strike Over Poor Conditions

Forty workers of Stone Construction Company Limited in Kabale district have laid down their tools to protest poor working conditions. 

Stone Construction Company Limited was contracted to tarmac three feeder roads in Kabale municipality in April this year under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development-USMID project at Shillings 13 billion.

The three roads include Nyerere road and Nyerere Avenue and Kigongi road.  However, the workers accuse Stone Construction Company Limited of among other things overworking them and cutting their wages without any clear reason.

On Tuesday, the workers stormed the office of the Mayor Kabale municipality to express discomfort with the company. Ronald Tayebwa, one of the concerned workers accused the top managers of denying them sick leave whenever they get health problems. Tayebwa says that whenever the workers get health problems, they are ordered to work or go away forever, which violates their rights.

Morris Mujurizi, another concerned worker accuses the company of deducting their pay from Shillings 10,000 to 7000 each day without any explanation.

Nazario Matovu, the Public Relations Officer Stone Construction Company told our reporter on phone that all the accusations by the striking workers are baseless.
