A man believed to be in 40’s is detained at Moroto Central Police Station for allegedly torturing his mother to death over money meant for the elderly in Moroto district. The incident occurred at Nachukea village, Lotirir parish in Nadunget Sub County some 12 kilometres South West of Moroto town.

Angilo Lokol reportedly killed Angeline Longole (75) on Tuesday night after she failed to meet his financial demands.

Anthony Lokiru, the Nachukea village chairperson, explains that the deceased had just withdrawn 20,000 shillings, a portion of her Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) money in Moroto.

Shortly thereafter he was alerted by residents after hearing loud cries. He adds that when he arrived he found the mother already dead. She was lying in a pool of blood. He goes on to say that he informed the police who rushed to the scene.

Under SAGE, a five year government program, elderly persons receive 24,000 shillings per month to help them fight poverty, ill-health and poor shelter among others. The project is being piloted in 14 districts in Uganda. Some of the districts include Napak, Kole, Amudat, Zombo, Kyegegwa, Kaberamaido, Kiboga, Kyenjojo, Apac, Moroto and Nakapiripirit.

Rose Azikia, the Deputy District Crime Officer Moroto says the police rescued the suspect after irate residents had ordered him to dig his own grave with intent to lynch him.

Azikia says village council records indicate the son had carried out a series of violent attacks on the mother before. She says once investigations are complete, the suspect will be produced in courts of law to answer charges.

Lokal, the suspect, confesses that he did kill his mother but that it was unintentional as he was under the influence of alcohol.
