The price of sugar has remained high in Hoima town as shops run out of supplies.

Many shops around Hoima taxi and Bus Park have run out of sugar while few of them have just a few bags of left.

Mathew Mugisa, a shop operator in Hoima Bus Park says he ran out of supplies four days ago. Mugisa explains that he has contacted his suppliers in Kampala who say they have not got any sugar supplies yet.

The businessman says he is now left with no option but to turn away his retailers who want sugar.

Margaret Asiimwe, a shop operator at Hoima park cell says its now a week since she ran out of sugar supplies. The business woman says she is however reluctant to bring in more sugar for fear of making losses incase the prices abruptly go down.

Augustine Balikenda, a wholesale shop operator in Hoima Taxi Park and the Kinyara sugar Hoima distributor, says he has resorted to personally importing sugar from Tanzania.

Balikenda says this is the reason why he has managed to keep his sugar supplies afloat after he failed to get any sugar from his Ugandan suppliers.

As a result of this the retail sugar price has remained at 5000 shillings per kilogram while a 50 kilogram bag goes for 220,000 shillings.

Odong says given his small income, he now prioritizes his family necessities and sugar has now been eliminated.

Last week, President Yoweri Museveni ordered a tax exemption on sugar imports, a move aimed at bringing down prices for the product.
