The Ruharo parish model project in Ishaka Bushenyi municipality suffers a setback following reports that all the beneficiaries slaughter all the heifers, goats and pigs supplied to them by state house.

The parish, with 930 homesteads, was selected for support under the Presidential Initiative on Poverty Eradication, to engage in modern agriculture and serve as an example to other parishes in the country that it was possible to overcome household poverty through modern agriculture on a small piece of land.

To implement the project, the farmers were engaged in activities like dairy zero grazing, the growing of bananas, fruits, pineapples, vegetables, coffee as well as rearing goats and piggery projects. The program is monitored by state house.

But today, 10 years after its establishment, beneficiaries are reported to have no trace of the animals offered to them. Majority of them were sold off, while others were reportedly slaughtered, the Bushenyi Resident District Commissioner Isaac Kawooya says.

Kawooya adds that his office is trying to force all the beneficiaries who sold the animals to return them or face arrest.

However, James Karooro, one of the beneficiaries’ claims that the animals supplied failed to survive the harsh weather conditions in the village. Karooro says these were supplied to a section of communities freely to graze and later pass them on to others after producing but this could not happen since most of them died before the production cycle.

George Kabigumire, an LC1 chairperson instead blames state house for the project failure saying that farmers were given animals, without any provision for drugs and pasture. Kabigumire admits that the project instead became costly for the locals forcing them to sell the animals.
