Two vehicles belonging to Kyambogo University have been set ablaze by rioting students to protest a deadline issued by the University administration for Students to clear their tuition fees.  The vehicles, a Pajero of registration number UG 1181 E and land cruiser number UG 1780 were set ablaze this afternoon in the university garage. It is alleged that unidentified students sneaked into the garage and set the two vehicles blaze.


They also smashed the windscreen of police car and fire brigade truck. Irene Kamesi a police officer attached to the Police fire brigade headquarters was also injured in the clashes between the students and anti riot police. Our reporter, who is in Kyambogo University, says police has picked up unidentified student in connection to the burning of both vehicles.

It all started this morning, after private students went on rampage to protest against a deadline set up by the University administration for students to clear their fees.  They accused the University of giving them a month’s notice despite of the hard economic times. The angry students broke glasses and window panes at the university administration forcing police to intervene and disperse them.

Olive Namazzi, Guild President Kyambogo University told URN that the tuition is too high for the students to clear within the set deadline. She explains that that local students offering a course such as finance and accounting pay shillings 700.000, while international student pay shillings 1.4 million.


She asked the university administration to extend the grace period to enable the students clear up the money. Police led by Andrew Kaweesi, Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander and Grace Turyagumanawe, the Director of Operations is still engaged in running battles with the students.
