Catherine Musimenta (10), a pupil at Kikondeka primary school, was struck by lightning on Monday evening during a hailstorm. The hailstorm that begun at about 5pm lasted over 2 hours.

She was rushed to BAMU hospital in Mateete trading centre in critical condition.

BAMU hospital doctor Dr. Elly Muhumza said the girl was brought in with her legs paralyzed. He said the girl was undergoing intensive medical care and medics hoped she would make good recovery.

But Musimenta was not the only victim of the hailstorm.

More than 30 families have also been affected by the storm. The most affected villages were Lusaana, Kikondeka in the parishes of Manyama in Lwebitakuli subcounty and Mateete subcounty.

The LC1 Chairman of Lusaana village, John Kamugisha was one of the most affected residents with his house destroyed. He said ten other houses had been destroyed in the storm.

Rose Namatovu, a mother of five at Lusaana village, said the hailstorm blew off the roof of her house. She sustained injuries on her head but her five children managed to escape from the house during a heavy down pour.

The hailstorm destroyed classroom blocks of St. Mary’s Lusaana primary schools which house 245 pupils.

Banana and cassava gardens were also destroyed.

Musimenta's injury comes less than two weeks after lightning struck seven pupils in Bukomansimbi district. Their teacher lost his life during that incident at Kyabagoma Muslim primary school.
