Prof. Gilbert Bukenya says corruption may have compromised the plans by the opposition to choose a single candidate to contest against President Museveni in 2016 elections.

Former Vice President, Professor Gilbert Bukenya says the Democratic Alliance was infected by corruption leading to failure to choose a single candidate for the 2016 presidential elections.

Bukenya who has since embarked on consultations for his presidential bid told a meeting in Masaka that he knows that corruption played a role behind the scenes at The Democratic Alliance (TDA)

He did not name who the corrupt persons were and what form the corruption took but said he know the perpetrators.

Bukenya says he was disappointed by the turn of events in The Democratic Alliance especially during the summit meetings.

He says that he had opted out of the race to allow for consensus between former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi and Doctor Kiiza Besigye, but has now bounced back after the two failed to agree.

Bukenya's  National Unity-PNU, held a consultation meeting in Masaka district on Friday. He also used the occasion to collect signatures for his nomination.

On Wednesday this week, The Democratic Alliance Summit failed to reach consensus on a joint presidential candidate, after Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Conservative Party (CP) declined to support former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi.

Democratic Party (DP), Go-Forward-Pro Change, People's Progressive Party (PPP), Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA) and Olara Otunnu's Uganda People's Congress (UPC) endorsed the candidature of Amama Mbabazi.

JEEMA President Asuman Basalirwa and Professor Gilbert Bukenya's Pressure for National Unity (PNU) did not make their choice because they were not at the meeting.
