Prison Warders Beat Inmate to Death

Prison warders at Imanyiro prison in Mayuge district have beaten an inmate to death.

The deceased has been identified as Abubaker Waiswa, a resident Nango village in Malongo Sub County, Mayuge district.

Waiswa died on Tuesday evening after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of prison warders led by Alex Olupot, Officer in charge at Imanyiro remand prison.

Badru Isiko, the LC 1 Chairman Imanyiro village says that Waiswa was part of a group of inmates who had gone to dig in his village.
 
It is alleged that Waiswa refused to dig forcing the prison warders to assault him. Isiko says that when he received information, he rushed to the scene only to find Waiswa’s body lying in a pool of blood.
 
The body was shortly after taken to Buluba hospital in Mayuge district.

Angry relatives of the deceased mounted a hunt for Alex Olupot and his team to avenge his death, but they had already fled into hiding.
 
Robert Kiine Tebigwayo, the Superintendent of Prisons Mayuge district confirmed the death of inmate.

Tebigwayo said prison authorities were going to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the inmate.

A 2011 human rights report by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees showed the lack of respect for the integrity of inmates. This included unlawful killings, torture, and other abuse of suspects and detainees.
