Police have stepped up the hunt for five more suspects linked to the murder of Pastor Steven Mugambe and 8 members of his family. Mugambe was hacked to death together with his family members on January 13, 2013 at their home in Mutegombwa village, Kyebe Sub-county in Rakai district.

The other victims included his wife Noeline Nalinya, Bena Nakivumbi, Jane Nakiwala, Christine Nasimbwa, Max Nakirijja, Dan Ssemwanga, Andrew Mpeirwe and Maria Nakajugo Musanya.

Police picked up three suspects including former rally ace Ponsiano Lwakataka, Asuman Muddu and a Tanzanian National Vincent Fagensi and arraigned them before court as the search for the remaining suspects continues.

Early this year police disclosed the identities of the remaining suspects, who have since gone into hiding. They are Simon Kalule of Kyanakibbi village in Bikomansimbi district and Emmanuel Zzinda of Kyakamunya-Para village in Butenga Sub-county in Bukomansimbi District.

As a result, police has stepped a hunt for the suspects for the last three weeks. Taban Chiriga, the Rakai District Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Officer says they have deployed detectives at all exit points including Kacheera, Mutukula, Kasensero and others which the suspects can use to flee the county.

Detectives who spoke to URN on condition of anonymity say for fear of being reprimanded by their superiors say there were plans to arrest the suspects before the Chiriga's transfer but this didn't happen adding that, by the time he was reinstated the suspect had disappeared without any trace.

Also wanted in connection with the same murders are Richard Ssematiko and one Ssenfuma of Nkoni village in Lwengo district. Another detective says the escape of the suspects has put residents of Mutegombwa village in Kanabulemu parish-Kyebe Sub-county on tension since some of them are prosecution witnesses in the case.

Charles Njuba, the Kyebe Sub-county LC V councilor visited Mutegombwa village last week and found most of the residents worried since police has failed to arrest the suspects. The residents have asked police to provide them with security until when the suspects are arrested. An elder in Pastor Mugambe's church says the survivors of the murder are also living in fear.
