Police Post Locked Over Rent Arrears

Hanga police post in Kigorobya Sub County in Hoima district has been evicted for alleged failure to clear rent arrears for the last three years.
 

Stephen Dawa, the landlord of the building evicted the police post on Saturday evening. The force has been renting the building at Shillings 65,000 each month. Dawa says Uganda Police Force owes him Shillings 2,275,000 in accumulated rent arrears.
 

 
According to Dawa, the police management last paid him in January 2016 and has been dodging him since then prompting him to close the facility. Dawa says he served Police management including Hoima District Police Commander and Kigorobya sub county leadership a demand notice but nothing has been done.

Vincent Avunga, the area LC 1 Chairperson faults the sub county and police leadership for failing to clear the rent arrears. He says the landlord was right to close the facility since police has failed to clear rent for the last three years.

Robert Osigire, the officer in charge of Hanga police post confirms the closure of the facility, saying all their documents are locked up in the building. Osigire says he has already notified his bosses to resolve the matter.
 

He fears the closure of the police post may escalate crime during this festive season. URN visited the outpost and several officers seated outside the closed building.
 
 
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson told URN he wasn't yet aware of the closure of the outpost.
