Police in Fort Portal is investigating the death of a police officer who was found unconscious on Monday morning and died on his way to hospital.

The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Reuben Okrut, a police constable attached to Kamwenge police station in Kamwenge district.

Bakari Muga Bashir, the Ruwenzori region publicist, says the police officer was beaten up by unknown persons and left lying in a pool of blood in Kitumba East division Fort Portal municipality.

He was discovered by early risers who alerted the police that one of their own was lying unconscious in the town centre in a bad state.

Bakari says Okrut was rushed to Fort Portal referral hospital where he died shortly on arrival.

According to the doctor’s report, Okrut died of blood clotting in the chest and the head.

Bakari explains that Okrut’s body is currently being kept at Fort Portal referral hospital mortuary waiting police to arrange for its transportation to Kumu district, eastern Uganda, his ancestral home.

An officer at Fort Portal police station who spoke to this reporter on condition of anonymity speculated that Okrut could have been the victim of a rival for the affections of a woman. The officer claimed that Okrut had been engaged in love affairs with many women at Red House Mpanga and Kitumba Kyepatiko in East division who could have led to a jealous rival waylaying him.

It is also reported that Okrut had reluctantly accepted a transfer from Fort Portal to Kamwenge. Okrut is reported to have made almost weekly visits to Fort Portal from his new station in Kamwenge district.
