A CID Police officer attached to Bundibugyo police station, has been sent on remand at Katojo Government prison in Fort Portal, in connection with the robbery incident last year of Bundibugyo Stanbic Bank. The suspect has been identified as Joseph Masereka. According to Micheal Komunjara, the deputy Western region criminal Investigations officer, Masereka connived with the robbers to steal 1.3 billion shillings after which he was given a 10 million cut from the booty. In November 2007, Thugs broke into the bank and robbed the money which was meant to pay cocoa farmers in the district. Seven people including the bank manager were arrested in connection with the robbery. They were however released on bond. Three more people were arrested early this year in connection with the robbery. The three were identified as Tadeo Baluku of Kasese, Abdul Karim Simbwa, of Mubaraka zone in Kampala and Bakari Muyomba also a resident of Kampala. Martin Abilu, the regional police commander, told reporters in Fort-portal, that Simbwa, a scrap dealer was found with 40 million shillings and confessed that he had used some money to buy a 35 million shillings house in Kampala. The regional criminal investigations officer says that the robbers received technical knowledge of robbing Banks from South Africa and Tanzanian Technicians who are skilled in Manufacturing of strong safes.
