The police have blocked a planned demonstration of cattle farmers in Sembabule district over the delayed lifting of livestock quarantine.

Last week the herdsmen during a crisis meeting convened at rainbow motel in Sembabule town council gave the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries an ultimatum to lift the quarantine or else they demonstrate.

Lameck Kigozi, the Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson says that the farmers should have written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for clearance before planning for the demonstration.

Kigozi says that the decision by cattle farmers to strike is illegal and the police will not hesitate to arrest anyone who will take part.

Cue out: // "……they should stop it".

He says that the herdsmen should remain calm as they wait for communication from the Ministry.

The herdsmen led by Maurice Ninsima, who had planned to demonstrate on Thursday argue that they have been greatly affected by cattle quarantine for the past two years.

He says that the herdsmen cannot be convinced that the area is still affected by foot and mouth disease and yet the veterinary authorities have not registered any new case since November 2017.
