Over Twenty Arrested for Torching Houses in Soroti.

Police has arrested 22 people for setting ablaze over forty housing units in Soroti district.

The suspects now detained at Soroti Central police station were picked up on Wednesday evening in Asuret Sub County.
 
They reportedly burnt the houses in vengeance for one of their relatives Robert Obai (36) killed after he was trapped with somebody’s wife on Monday.
 
After the incident, the deceased’s relatives went on rampage looting properties, killing animals and destroying crops in the gardens.
 
The owners of the 41 housing units fled their homes leaving room for the attackers to loot and destroy their property.

Joab Wabwire, the Soroti District Police Commander says the suspects killed goats, pigs, chicken, looted property and burnt houses. Fortunately no person was killed in the process.

Wabwire adds that some of the properties were found hidden near the homes of some of the suspects. He however declined to reveal their identities saying this could jeopardize police investigations.

Obai’s body was recovered on Tuesday and will be buried today (Thursday) at his village in Adala , Asuret sub county, Soroti.

Juma Hassan Nyene, the Public relations officer East Kyoga region says the suspects will be charged with different counts ranging from Ason to Malicious Damage of property.
