New Mpanga Market Develops Cracks

A section of the newly constructed Mpanga Market in Fort Portal has developed cracks, almost a year after it was handed over to vendors. The shillings 11.3 billion market was commissioned In December last year by the Vice President, Edward Ssekandi. 

It is one of the seven markets countrywide that were redeveloped under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme (MATIP-1) - a multi-million dollar project supported by the Government and the African Development Bank.
 
Excel Construction Company undertook the construction of Mpanga market. However, some shops in the market have developed wide cracks on the floor, walls and ceiling. The doors that were installed are also of poor quality and some are broken. The substandard work has angered Fort portal municipal council and some vendors who petitioned the Ministry of Local Government over the matter.

On Friday, workers of Excel were seen redoing the work, which will last a month. Steven Baguma, a vendor says that they have been told by the municipal authorities to close their shops to enable repairs start. He says that the municipality should look for a temporarily place where to locate the affected vendors so that they can continue earning their daily income.
 
Willy Magezi, the LC3 Chairperson West Division says that the repairs will affect the revenue of the division since it will be difficult for them to get rent from vendors whose shops will be closed for the repairs.

Edison Asaba Ruyonga, the Mayor Fort Portal Municipality says that the contractors will have to meet the costs of repairing the defects. Asaba also blames the Ministry of Local Government for not involving the municipal council in supervising the market when it was still under construction.

Mpanga market accommodates about 1,200 vendors. It has food stalls, bars and restaurants, banks, clinics, salons, fruit and vegetable stands, butcheries and a day care centre. It consists of 400 stalls, 218 lockup shops and 700 pitches.

Fort Portal Municipal Council estimates to collect 1.3 billion shillings in revenue annually from the market. The revenue will be shared between the municipal council and East Division. The market is managed and maintained by the municipal council to ensure sanitation and orderliness.
