A proposal to increase Nyendo Taxi Park fees from 18 million shillings to 22 million shillings per month has been postponed until January 2014.

The decision was reached after a meeting between the Masaka United Taxi Drivers and Owners Cooperative Society (MUTDOCS) and division leaders.

The meeting was called by the District Security Committee Chairperson, RDC Chris Owori Odoi.

Also present at the meeting were Masaka Municipality Mayor Godfrey Kayemba and District Police Commander Henry Kavuma.

The proposal to increase the monthly taxi park fees had been reached by the division leaders.

RDC Odoi informed MUTDOCS that the proposal would not be instituted right away. It was supposed to go into effect on November 1.

Odoi argued that the taxi operators should be granted an extension up to the end of the year to prepare to pay the increased fee. He said the proposal had been reached without adequate consultation.

Vincent Ssentongo, the Spokesperson MUTDOCS, welcomed the decision. He said that the taxi operators already had difficulty raising the 18 million shillings per month and needed more time.

The division leaders insist that the new fees will help them to deliver better services to the public like garbage collection.
