The LDC Grade One Magistrates' Court on Friday remanded a Makerere University Professor accused of rape of a student to Luzira Prisons.

Professor Christopher Bakuneeta of the College of Natural Science appeared before the Grade One Magistrates'' Court at the LDC and was remanded until 22nd of April 2016 when he will reappear at the same court.

Moses Baligeya, the Grade One Magistrate did not allow him to enter any plea because rape is a capital offence that can only be tried in the High Court.

Prosecution alleges that on 27th March 2016, Baligeya had the carnal knowledge of the victim without her consent. It is reported the victim who rents a garage at Baligeya's home on the fateful night came back from the university, exhausted and failed to lock the door. It was at this time that the said professor sneaked into the house and had forceful sex with her.

The victim reportedly confided in a friend who advised her to report the case to police. When she reported, Baligeya was arrested on Friday last week and taken to Wandegeya police station.

Back in the University, the management has suspended professor Baligeya to pave way for the court proceedings to continue.

Engineer Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem, the chairperson of Makerere University Council says the management took the decision to suspend the Don in consultation with the university's code of ethics and the public service standing order;

//Cue in: "The matter is now…
Cue out: …service standing order."//

He says the university does not condone such acts and will deal with it decisively. He says beyond the gates of the university, the law must take its course.
