However, Muslims in the districts of Kigezi, Kisoro, Sironko and Apac will have to wait before their District Kadhis are appointed.
Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, the Mufti of Uganda has appointed 30 Kadhis to fill up the vacant posts in the old and newly created Muslim districts across the country. The Kadhis have been appointed on a one year probation period. However, Muslims in the districts of Kigezi, Kisoro, Sironko and Apac will have to wait before their District Kadhis are appointed. Ahmed Kayongo Nyago, the Chairperson of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Electoral Commission says the four districts missed out because the nominated candidates were found wanting or didn’t show up for interviews.
Recently, Sheikh Mohammed Murushid Luwemba, the UMSC secretary for religious affairs said that over 80 candidates were subjected to written and oral examinations to gage their ability to serve the community. Sheikh Mubajje made the appointments in consultation with the College of Sheikh, a body that oversees religious affairs in the UMSC. The appointment of the District Kadhis comes months after UMSC conduction successful grassroot elections across the country.
According to Kayongo, the Mufti also confirmed Sheikh Al-hhay Swaibu the Kadhi of Yumbe. Nyago explains that Sheikh Al-hhay Swaibu has been acting for seven years. The Mufti also appointed Sheikh Abaasi Battira, the care taker Kadhi for Wakiso district until a later date when a substantive District Kadhi will be appointed. Sheikh Muhammad Iga was appointed the Kadhi of Kampala taking over from Sheikh Abdul Kadir Mbogo, who is frail because of old age.
