The Ministry of Health has extended the contract period for the renovation and expansion of Moyo General Hospital by another five months.

The project was initially expected to last for 18 months from February 2014 to end in October 2015.

Early this month, The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health Dr Asuman Lukwago suspended the contract awarded to Prism Construction Company Ltd on ground that the contractor had to beat the project deadline.

The 12 billion Shillings project involves the construction of a casualty ward, new outpatients department, a T-block which accommodates the maternity wing and a theater plus renovation of the old structures.

But Wesiga Rogers Jacob, the contractors Site Manager says that the suspension had been annulled following a meeting with the Permanent Secretary and Ministry of Health officials. He says the two sides agreed to have the works completed by June 2016.

The Acting Moyo District Health Officer Iddi Franklin called for the collective evaluation of the ongoing works to ensure that the contractor is supported to beat the new deadline. He said that the project was initially delayed by compensation squabbles between the hospital and neighboring communities.

He also appealed for the upgrade of the facility to a referral hospital to serve other districts of Yumbe and Adjumani respectively.
