Minister Cautions Veterans against Engaging in Illegal Fishing

State Minister for Veteran Affairs Bright Rwamirama has cautioned veterans in Kalangala district against engaging in illegal fishing.
 
Rwamirama who has been on a working visit to Kalangala distrust. met veterans from the seven sub counties that make up Kalangala district on Saturday afternoon. He expressed dismay to out increasing reports of their participation in illegal fishing activities.  

Several reports by the district security committee and the fisheries protection unit have pinned  veterans in Bufumira, Bubeke and Mugoye sub counties for buying monofilaments, the illegal fishing gear which they use to trap fish. 
 
The fisheries Protection Unit in Kalangala also arrested and detained Mariam Nyakikongoro and Richard Kasiita, commonly known as Komando, both in the Kalangala Veteran's league for extorting money from fishermen and protecting those who engaged in illegal fishing on Buwuvu and Lulamba islands. 
 
Rwamirama says that  wheras he acknowledges that many Veterans lack income generating activities, none of them should engage in illegal fishing as an alternative. He also indicated that the government would support Veterans helping government to curb all illegal acts in the country.

Since the inception of the Fisheries Protection unit in February 2017, soldiers fighting illegal fishing have always worked with veterans as sister forces to engage in activities to curb the practice.
 
Mwesigwa Tadeo, the Kalangala District Production department Secretary and one of the veterans says the ex servicemen are forced to engage in illegalities in the search for basic needs.

Innocent Abaho, the commander of the fisheries has, on several occasions, suggested that the Fisheries Protection Unit works only with Veterans who have not engaged in illegal fishing before.
