Religious leaders in Rubanda Parish, Kabale District have castigated State Minister for Economic Monitoring Henry Banyenzaki for scorning them.  Their outburst follows remarks by Banyenzaki asking priests to concentrate on spreading the Gospel as opposed to politicking.

Banyenzaki reportedly made the remarks during the recent NRM mobilization and sensitization Meetings. He allegedly accused Religious leaders in the Kigezi region of trying to interfere with political trends and de-campaigning government programmes, contrary to their mandate.

But Rev. Fr. Thomas Batima, the Parish Priest for Rubanda Catholic church described the remarks as unfortunate before equating Banyenzaki to Sekabaka Mwanga II who killed the Uganda Martyrs for what he referred to as trying to block the religious leaders from doing their work.

The bitter remarks come barely a day after the Kigezi Inter-religious council Chairperson Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda demanded a public apology from the Minister over the same statement.

The anger by the priests has also resulted into anger among a cross section of Christians in Rubanda County West Constituency which Banyenzaki represents accusing him of being disrespectful.

The Minister has however denied making any negative remarks against the priests.
