The Lands, Housing and Urban Development Minister, Betty Amongi has snubbed calls from Uganda People's Congress-UPC and the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM parties to join the Apac Municipality parliamentary election campaigns.
About three weeks ago, Fred Ebil-Ebil, the acting UPC Secretary General summoned Amongi together with Uganda's Ambassador to Canada, Ruth Aceng to join the campaigns of the UPC party candidate, Patrick Ochan.
The NRM vice chairperson for Northern Uganda also summoned Amongi to join the campaign team of the NRM candidate and former Tourism State Minister, Jovino Akaki Ayumu. The other candidates are FDC's George Okello Ekwaro, and five independents Rev. John Robert Atim Etime, Bishop Edward Stanley Engena Maitum, the former Apac Woman MP Lucy Ajok, Okot Conno and Bonny Mackline Odongo Oding.
After remaining tightlipped on the invitations to join the campaigns, Amongi has finally broken her silence, saying she will not be joining any campaign team. Amongi told URN on Thursday that her relevance in the Apac municipality MP campaigns is very minimal since she hails from Oyam district. On other hand Ambassador Aceng turned down the request to join the campaigns on grounds that she is an active civil servant who are barred from participating in any political activities. Isa Otto Amiza, a UPC leader and former Oyam South County MP described the invitation to Amongi to participate in the Apac Municipality campaigns as slippery and volatile.
During the 2016 Presidential Election, Ambassador Aceng who was the then Kole woman MP and member of UPC campaign from president, Yoweri Museveni against opposition candidates. Electoral Commission has scheduled July 27th, 2018 as the date for elections for various elective positions in the newly created municipalities.
