The dead are from Nyarubaare in Bugamba - Rwampara county Mbarara district on the night of August 28, 2016.  They had reportedly moved in to assist in putting out the fire that had gutted a nearby forest. The fire was reportedly started by an area resident identified as Nyangoma Twogyeirwe.

The dead include Jona Atuhaire aged 25, Godfrey Kareho 52 and 32-year-old Charles Asiimwe. Others are Perezi Ndyomugabe 32 and Tobias Ikiriza who is 25. They are all residents of the same area.

Julius Karyaija a resident of the area says that the dead were engulfed by the fire that they had gone to put out.

He says that it took long to realise that they had died since there was a lot of wind which made it difficult for locals to easily put it out.

Rwizi region police spokesperson Ibn Senkumbi told our reporter that the matter is being investigated. He says it is unfortunate that there are some locals who have gone ahead to always set forests on fire.

He says that Nyangoma Twogyeirwe who is suspected to have started the fire is being held at Ntungamo police post pending a transfer to Mbarara police station.

Tumusiime Bamuturaki, the Mbarara district chairperson told URN that the district leadership has been cautioning the locals on the dangers of bush-burning but in vain.
The decision comes barely weeks after residents in the area called for regulation of bush burning activities.

The district leadership ordered the arrest of all those who are behind the fires but no one has been arrested as yet.
