Doctors at Mbarara regional referral Hospital are stuck with conjoined twins who were born on Sunday.

The Executive Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital Dr. George Upenytho says the hospital management on behalf of government was ready to transfer the twins and the mother; however the process has been delayed by the mother who has rejected the offer of being taken to Kampala.

The parents have been identified as Katusiime Anabela (26), and Sabira Mwanga, both residents of Kijungu suburb in Nyamityobora ward Kakoba division in Mbarara Municipality.

Dr. Upenytho said the babies have two pairs of legs, two arms but share one chest.  He says the hospital doesn’t have capacity to execute surgery on the Siamese twins.

Dr Kalubi Peters, a paediatrician at Mbarara Hospital says health officials are getting constrained to feed the conjoined twins. Dr Kalubi explained that doctors are yet to establish whether they also share the liver and lungs.

He said this situation makes it difficult for the doctors at the hospital to transport the twins to Mulago in Kampala for surgery although the hospital has provided an ambulance with an accompanying doctor and skilled nurse.

Their grandmother Saidati Namaande appealed for help saying the family is financially incapacitated and that they may not afford to raise the required money for upkeep in Kampala.
