Annet Namataka the Chairperson Nabweyo community care coalition organization has been arrested for alleged embezzlement. Namataka together with Sam Waka, her husband, allegedly stole eight million shillings meant for the NGO activities. They are jointly accused with Abdallah Kiyingi and his wife Abu Baliki, both members of the organization. The four are being detained at Mbale central police station, pending an investigation into their activities. Diana Nandawula, the Eastern region police spokesperson, says Nabweyo community based organization working under the Uganda Women's Efforts to Save Orphans-UWESO has since 2009, been operating in Namanyonyi sub-county. Preliminary investigations show that the suspects have been collecting money from the more than 120 members in a savings pool. But instead of keeping the money safely, the treasurer and the chairman turned up yesterday and claimed that the money, which was being kept in boxes, has been stolen. Enraged by the reports, the members who have each been paying 10,000 shillings per month smelled something foul and alerted police, leading to the arrest of the suspects. The four boxes where the money was being kept reportedly went missing on Sunday at 2:00pm. Nandawula says the four will be charged for burglary and theft of organization money.
