Masaka woman arrested for child murder

Police in Masaka is holding a woman accused of murdering her step son for stealing silver fish commonly known as Mukene that was prepared for supper last week.

Gertrude Nakabuye was picked up from her home in Minyinya village in Kyanamukaka sub-county by police on a tip off from residents who found the body of Martin Magembe lying in the nearby bush.

Noah Serunjogi, the southern region police spokesman says that Nakabuye is being held at Masaka central police on charges of murder. He says that’s the body of Magembe has been taken to Masaka hospital for a postmortem.

He says that they got information that Nakabuye killed her step son at around 10:00pm last week on Friday.  Preliminary police investigations indicate that the minor died of strangulation.

But in her statement to police, Nakabuye says that Magembe died of Malaria and hunger because her husband Peter Nyanzi had neglected the family.

She claims that Nyanzi a businessman working in Sembabule district abandoned the family in November last year as a result of a family dispute leaving her with the burden of feeding two kids.

The death of Magembe brings to five, the number of children killed in Masaka this year as a result of family conflicts. Alice Alia, the officer in charge of Masaka Family Protection Unit says that most of the children died as a result of being tortured by their step mothers.
