Democratic Party President, Norbert Mao on Saturday campaigns for former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi in Gulu Municipality.

Mao, who was meeting residents at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu said Mbabazi was capable of running the country. Mao also says Mbabazi knows president Museveni well, and therefore the person to challenge the incumbent at the moment.

"This time round, let us first give our trial to Mbabazi, he has just recently been baptized with tear gas as a new recruit into opposition. We know where he came from and he is the ideal contender for the opposition," said Mao.

Mao however claims he was a capable choice but decided to back Mbabazi for The Democratic Alliance for the purpose of strengthening forces to cause change.

He is still unsure of contesting for Gulu Municipality seat in next year's parliamentary elections, despite requests by leaders and residents of Gulu district.

He promised to consult with his party members in the Democratic Party, so he can come out with a clear stand on whether he will contest for the MP seat. Gulu LC 5 chairman, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi is among the leaders who called on Mao to run for the Gulu MP seat.

Gulu Mayor George Labeja, an NRM member who recently declared he would run as independent in 2016, said he would study the Go-Forward initiative and see what they have to offer the country.

Before contesting for presidency in 2011, Mao was the MP Gulu Municipality for two terms from 1996-2006. He then became LC 5 chairperson untill 2011.
