A man in Kisoro district was on Thursday evening buried alive after a pit from where he was mining sand collapsed.

The incident took place in Mukanywogo Village, Chintare ward in Kisoro town council.

The dead has been only identified as Buntu , believed to be 40 years.  The rocks lining the walls of the pit are said to have caved in. It took locals more than a day to retrieve the body on Friday.

Kisoro district police commander Bosco Otim told Uganda Radio Network that the deceased’s body has been taken to Kisoro hospital for a postmortem and will be handed over to the family for burial.

The Kisoro town Council mayor Sam Byibesho says that the local authorities had stopped all the mining activities at the quarry and they were surprised to hear that someone was mining sand from there.

He says last year the authorities realized that the quarry posed a danger to the lives of those who were sneaking in to mine and sell sand without the knowledge of the authorities.

This is not the first incident in Kisoro district. On the December 16, 2011 five people were buried alive in a stone quarry while excavating sand to repair their houses for Christmas. The incident took place at Nyamushungwa village in Mabungo parish in Nyarusiza Sub County.
