Police in Mityana have arrested one person in connection with the killing of a police officer.

The suspect in Police custody has been identified as Mugerwa Christopher (37), a resident of Busunju trading centre, along the Hoima road, in Ssekanyonyi Sub County in Mityana district.

Mugerwa was picked by police detectives from Kawempe, a Kampala suburb, where he had been hiding since he committed the offence in April 2013.

Mityana district police commander Kintu Henry says the police had a few months ago got a tip off, directing them where Mugerwa was hiding and so started watching his movements until they arrested him on Thursday.

It is alleged that Mugerwa killed Corporal Bitenehirwe Justus, by hacking him to death. The deceased was attached to Busunju police station in Mityana district.

Kintu says according to their investigations, the deceased had misunderstandings with Mugerwa, over Mugerwa’s ex-wife, who the deceased had married.

He said on the day he was killed, the couple had been seen in one of the bars, and Mugerwa also was spotted trailing them.

Corporal Bitenehirwe was killed as he left the bar, returning to the police barracks.

Speaking from Mityana police station, Mugerwa denied killing the police officer. He says he has been in hiding because he is wanted for theft of animals.

But Kintu notes the suspect does not have any other cases at the police station. He says he will be sent to court on Friday to answer charges of murder.
