A 72 year old man in Mayuge village, Budhaya Sub County, Bugiri district has committed suicide after his sons stopped him from selling off his property.

Henry Mugadu had reportedly wanted to sell off his two houses and a one-acre piece of land in order to return to his home village of Kigulu in Nambale Sub County, Iganga district.

According to the LC2 secretary for information in Budhaya parish, Jafferi Kibwika, the deceased had on several occasions been engaged in quarrels with his two children.

Mugadu escaped to a nearby forest and hanged himself after hitting his son’s wife, Jennifer Naigaga on the head with an axe. Kibwika said the deceased could have thought his son’s wife had died as she was being transported to Bugiri main hospital.

Locals said the deceased had accused Naigaga of influencing his sons to block him from selling off his property.

Fred Ngobi, Mugadu’s neighbour says the deceased’s sons thought they would have nowhere to stay once the houses are sold off.

The body of the deceased was discovered by two women on Wednesday hanging onto a tree in the forest.

The officer in charge Mayuge police post, Geoffrey Walunsansa said Mugadu had on several occasions reported his two sons and their wives of blocking him from selling off his property.

He said the deceased had wanted to return to his home village claiming he feared for his life following various threats from locals.

The Bugiri district police commander, Richard Musisi says investigations into the matter are underway to establish why the deceased committed suicide.

Musisi expressed concern over the increase in the number of suicide cases in the district.

Over 24 cases of suicide have been reported in the district since the start of the year.
