Machar Fails to Show Up in Juba Again

South Sudan's vice president designate Riek Machar has failed to show up in Juba for the second day in a row after delaying his arrival yesterday.

Officials of Sudan People's Liberation Movement in Opposition-SPLM-IO, who are in Juba as part of the advance team of the opposition group said Machar, would not be coming today as planned.

They said that the SPLA-IO Chief of Staff General Gatwech Dual who was meant to fly to Juba ahead of Machar on a separate flight had not obtained flight clearances. General Gatwech Dual had earlier been reported to be in Gambella, Ethiopia waiting fly to Juba ahead of Dr Riek Machar.

Dr Machar was expected to arrive in Juba yesterday, but he failed due to a delayed clearance for Gen Gatwech.

The continued postponement of the return to Juba is a threat to a peace agreement signed last year with the hope of ending a civil war that started in December 2013.
