Police in Luweero is on the spot for illegal detention and alleged torture of 13 suspects who are accused of murdering a police officer.

The suspects are identified as; Eric Kirya, Abdullakim Ssenyimba, Ahamad Ssempala, Hudson Ssengendo,Arafat Mugabe, Vincent Kakumirizi,Brian Wagaba and Jimmy Kafeero.

On April 1,police rounded up the suspects from several zones in Luweero town and detained them on  grounds that they had a hand in the raid on Kasana Police Post where a detective constable Geoffrey Bala was killed and Sergeant Sarah Achan critically injured.

Police alleged that the suspects said to belong to a gang called B13, were avenging the death of their colleague Katongole Ssemuyaba who was shot by police in burglary attempt last year.

The suspects who were parade to the public today, accuse police of illegally detaining them for 23 days without trial which, is an abuse of their rights and against the mandatory 48 hours period provided for in the constitution.

They also accuse police officers of torture which, is against prevention and prohibition of torture Act 2012.

Ahamad Ssempala, a suspect, says that he was picked from Ngoma stage in Luweero town where he works as a tout and was shocked to learn that he was to be charged with murder which, he denies.

Enock Kiweewa, another suspect says he is a brick layer at Kikubajinja LC 1  Zone and he is protesting his continued detention without trial.

Umar Sserugo another suspect also accuses police of injuring his private parts,head,chest in torture and denying him treatment .

The suspects are now demanding that IGP investigates the officers at Luweero Central Police for torture and other human rights abuses.

Several residents also accused police of rounding up youths in town and bringing trumped up charges against them.

Lameck Kigozi the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson defended the continued detention of the suspects without trial, saying police is still investigating the matter.

It is alleged that the suspects attacked Kasana Police Post and killed a police officer.
